This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.
We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.
A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
